Overview to Tilt & Turn Windows and Lift & Slide Doors
What does Tilt & Turn Mean?
A Tilt and Turn Window (or door) is the most commonly used window (or door) type in Europe. German Tilt and Turn Technology is most likely the most advanced. Companies like" Rehau" produce PVC profiles while companies like "Hoppe", "Siegenia" or "Winkhaus" supply the necessary hardware. And Tilt & Turn Windows are all about the Hardware. While most North American window companies still manufacture Sliding and Casement windows, Europe has switched to Inward Tilting and Turning windows a long time ago - the main reason being the higher performance and longevity. The hardware that makes Tilt & Turn windows unique allows the window to open into the room, either turning like a door or tilting like an upside-down awning window. This concept allows you to have a large opening (when turned) similar to the old-fashioned push-out windows or a small opening (when tilted) for ventilation and air flow.
How are Tilt & Turn Windows Build?
Materials range from PVC, through wood, to Aluminum or even hybrids like Aluminum/Wood. By far the most common is PVC because of its finish consistency and longevity. Commonly all Tilt and Turn windows are steel re-enforced on all four sides. This means that the PVC profiles, which have hollow chambers, have a steel angle inserted into them. This gives the window a lot more strength than a normal PVC window would have. Tilt and Turn windows can be Double Glazed or Triple Glazed with Triple Glazing being the better choice for colder climates and sound abatement. The majority of the tilt and turn hardware is mounted on the top part of the sash/frame where it also acts as the tilting restrictor. Lateral hinges support the swing of the sash. The bottom pivot supports the tilt function.
How do Tilt & Turn Windows and Doors Perform?
Performance is where Tilt and Turn windows shine brightest. Due to their multiple weathertrips on both sash and frame, they shield extremely well against water and sound. When turning the handle to its locked position, the multiple locking points engage and pull the sash into the frame creating a tight fit , which again, seals the window better than probably all other window types. The multiple hollow chambers of the frame and sash profiles provide excellent insulation values. The steel re-enforcement provides extra strength in case of stormy weather and associated window "blow-outs".
Glazing in Tilt & Turn Windows and Doors
Due to the fact that Tilt and Turn window profiles are fairly deep, they can accept thicker Sealed Units (glass). It is also common for the same profile to have a variety of Glazing Bead widths so that you can change the Sealed Unit Thickness if need be. That means you can switch to Triple Glazed (from Double Glazed) for added thermal performance and sound reduction. All Sealed Units come filled with a Noble Gas like Argon. Thicker glass types like 8mm or 10mm can also be used in Sealed Units which is not possible with most Sliding or Casement/Awning Windows.
Climate and Tilt & Turn Windows
Tilt & Turn Windows and Doors excel in cool to cold climates. The U-Value which denotes the thermal transmittance is very low and, hence, there is very little heat that escapes from the inside to the outside on cold days. Responsible for the good insulation are the Argon Gas filled Triple Glazed Sealed Units (the glass of the window) and the air filled hollow chambers in the frame and sash of the window. Also helping are the multiple weatherstrips and gaskets around the perimeter of the window. During hot, sunny days, the LowE (low emissivity) Coating on the glass does help to reduce heat entering the house.
Tilt & Turn Windows and Sound Transmission
When is comes to noise reduction, Tilt & Turn Windows are unequalled. They seal so tightly and allow for such thick glazing that you can enjoy a very quiet interior of your home. For people living near airports, near train tracks or busy intersections in the city, Tilt & Turn Windows and Doors can be a life-saver. Sleeping well is very important as we all know and having noise reducing windows in your bed room will give you a better nights rest.
Tilt & Turn Windows and Forced Entry
With burglary being a common problem in many areas of Canada and the US, a secure window and door is very important. Tilt and Turn Windows perform extremely well when it comes to forced entry. Multiple Locking Points and the fact that the Locking Mechanism is actually Inside the frame and sash of the window make it hard for the window to be opened forcibly. Couple that with up to 3 layers of 6mm thick Laminate Glass and steel re-enforced frames and sashes and you have a virtually indestructible window.
Take-Away
Tilt & Turn windows and Lift & Slide Doors are strong, performance driven windows and doors. Anyone who ever used them in their home or office will know the difference when compared to Sliding or Casement windows. Less heat escaping your home in the winter and less noise coming in from the outside. Tilt & Turn windows perform exceptional when it comes to break-ins because the steel re-enforced frames and sashes as well as the hardware transform this type of window into the safest window on the market. The turning feature allows you to access adjacent panes from the inside of the house (for cleaning, etc.) and the tilting feature gives you home ventilation without rain coming in or wind catching the sash (and slamming it shut, etc.).
